India of My Dreams — Episode 2: Respect

I am Ayaan, and this week's episode is about something we talk about often but practice less than we think.

Respect.

Not the kind that comes with a title. Not the kind you give because someone is senior or successful or holds more power than you.

The quiet, everyday kind. The kind that costs nothing and means everything.

Respect doesn't always look like a grand gesture.

Sometimes it looks like letting someone finish their sentence — completely, without cutting in, even when you already know what you want to say next.

Sometimes it looks like not walking away when someone is still talking just because you've decided what they're saying doesn't matter.

Sometimes it looks like acknowledging the person who cleans your office every morning. Not just a nod. Their name. A genuine good morning that says — I see you. You matter here too.

Sometimes it looks like not forwarding blame when something goes wrong in a meeting. Taking a breath instead of pointing a finger. Understanding that protecting your ego in that moment costs someone else their dignity.

Sometimes it looks like listening to someone's idea without immediately explaining why it won't work. Giving it a moment. Giving them a moment. Because the courage it takes to speak up deserves at least that much in return.

Sometimes it looks like showing up on time. Because telling someone their time matters is easy. Proving it — that's respect.

And sometimes it looks like disagreeing with someone — completely, honestly — without making them feel small for thinking differently.

Because respect was never about agreement.

It was always about how you treat someone when you don't agree.

The India of my dreams is not one where everyone thinks the same way, earns the same amount, or lives the same life.

It is one where the differences don't become reasons to look down.

Where every person — regardless of what they do, where they come from, or how much they earn — is treated as someone worthy of basic human dignity.

That India doesn't need a policy.

It needs a choice.

Made by each of us. Every single day.

— Ayaan | And I am still learning, one respectful moment at a time.

Respect given freely costs you nothing. Respect withheld unnecessarily costs everyone.

More Dreams To Come.
